Current Events QTR 2 Week 1: 'Hiccup Girl' Charged with Murder

Jennifer Mee, as known as "hiccup girl" has been charged with first-degree murder. She met someone online, lured him into an empty home. He was robbed of $50 to $60 then killed. Jennifer and two other men were arrested hours after they found the man killed with several bullets in his body. I am unaware of how long she will be in jail.

My opinion on this article is different. I liked this article because they informed us about how someone we used to know as having hiccups, is now getting caught for murdering. I also liked how it told us the story short and sweet and then it went back into detail. I didn't like it because I never got to find out why Jennifer Mee killed this man. It just doesn't make sense to me. This is my opinion on this article.

This is a picture of Jennifer Mee that came with the article.

Current Events Week 7: Crystal Bowersox Gets Married

This article was about an American Idol runner-up, Crystal Bowersox, getting married to Brian Walker. They were longtime friends before it all turned into romance. Bowersox and Walker have been engaged since September. They got married at a club in Chicago on Sunday, the same place that they met. She was wearing an "earth-friendly" cotton dress. Now, "they're one happy Walkersox family".

I liked this article because I watch American Idol and I think that it was very interesting to hear about one of last year's contestants getting married. I thought it was unique how they got married in the same place that they met six years ago. I liked how she was wear an "earth-friendly" cotton dress. Crystal Bowersox has a lot of talent and I thought it was very cool on how they shared this information with us. This was my opinion on this article.

Current Events Week 6: Question of the Week

This article was from Athens, Greece. It is about truck drivers protesting about a new law liberalizing their profession. Truckers have been arguing that the tax and other benefits offered by the government have been giving them a loss in the value of their licenses. This happened after a law was passed about their profession turning into competition. Since the truck drivers are so fed up with this law, trucks have been parked along the streets for quite some time now, and it has been causing food, medicine, and other product shortages. Some of the people included in the article agree with the truck drivers because they say that the truck drivers have the right to fight for their own rights.

My opinion on this article is very strong. I agree with this because I also agree that the truck drivers should be able to fight for their own rights. I mean it is their jobs! I do disagree because it is causing problems for many other people also. They are causing problems in other job categories too. I like this article because it includes opinions from others. And this is my opinion on this article.

13 Drown in Boating Accident

A skiff packed with 75 Ethiopians and 10 Somalis was spotted in the Gulf of Aden by a South Korean warship USS Winston S. Churchill. On Monday morning, the skiff asked the warship for some aid. While sailors attempted to distribute fresh supplies, the people rushed to one side of the boat causing to capsize the skiff. 13 people drowned and 8 have not been found. The crew from the warship and Australian Patrol have only managed to save 61 passengers and the Navy is still investigating the incident.

I thought this article was interesting, as most of the articles I read are. I liked how it went far into detail, because it made it more visual. I also liked that it was very short. Telling the readers how many people were found so far also made me like the article. And that is what I thought about this article.

I got this article from an online source. Here is the link: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/27/13-drown-8-missing-after-skiff-getting-navy-aid-capsizes/?npt=NP1

Woman in Washington Admits Acid Attack was a Hoax!

On August 30th, Bethany Storro had acid thrown in her face. Bethany told police that it was an African-American woman. It turns out Bethany's injuries were self-inflicted and the acid attack had not occurred as she had told the police. In fact, she had bought a pair of sunglasses shortly before the attack to save her eyesight. Police and detectives have many more questions. Detectives are still interviewing her. Bethany is very upset and the it got bigger than she had expected it to.

I thought this article was very interesting. I did not like the fact that this women lied to law enforcement for no apparent reason. I don't know why she would do something like that to herself. It just didn't make any sense to me. Hopefully she will learn her lesson. In my opinion, it was a good article, but the wrong decision on her part.

The Woman who saved her own Pinky!

This article is about a woman who saved her own pinky. On a stormy day, Kulkarni came inside her house and was taking off her shoes. Someone slammed the door so the dog wouldn't get out. Her pinky happened to be there, and at first she thought that it was just bruised, but then she saw the tip of her pinky finger on the floor. She went to the emergency room, and they wouldn't put it back together, so she asked to see specialists. The specialists were going to amputate it, but she refused. Kulkarni researched, and she found stories on 60 Minutes and Oprah. It was about a new procedure called tissue regeneration, which makes amputated finger parts grow back. She went to a doctor and told him about it, and at first he was not sure about it, but she gave him some research materials and he finally agreed to try it. The treatment involved cleaning out the finger, removing scar tissue, and dipping her finger into MatriStem. After seven weeks of getting the treatment, he pinky finger grew back. That's what this article is about.

I liked this article, because it was very interesting. It wasn't like any other article. I mean, how often do you get to hear about someone's pinky tip growing back after it got cut off by a door? I liked how she just kept going on, making sure she was going to get her finger back, so she could do all of the things she could do before. And that is why I liked this article.

This is the picture of Kulkarni's new pinky beside her cut off pinky tip.

I found this article online at the CNN News site. Here is the link: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/09/09/pinky.regeneration.surgery/index.html?npt=NP1

Illegal Immigration

This article is about illegal immigration, and how the U.S. sees a major rise in children born to illegal immigrants. About 8% of the 4.3 million babies born in the U.S. in 2008 were born from illegal immigrant parents. The number of babies born from illegal immigrant parents jumped from 2.7 million, in 2003, to 4 million, in 2009. These illegal immigrants are also searching for jobs. The data from the childbirth study was analyzed to demographic characteristics of the illegal immigrant population. This is becoming a very important issue, that needs to be fixed! And, that is my summary on this article.
I agree with this article for several reasons. I don't think it is right how illegal immigrants are having children in the United States so they don't have to apply for citizenship, and they are automatically a U.S. Citizen. On the other hand, I think that most of us in the U.S. would do the same thing if we were in the same situation, even though it isn't right. Plus, it is against the law, and you have to obey the laws to be a citizen! These illegal immigrants are making a mistake, and this issue needs to be settled soon in my opinion. This is my reflection on this article.
Lastly, I think that this article is about citizenship, because it was about illegal immigrants, which relates to citizenship because these people aren't U.S. citizens. And that is what this article was about, what I thought about it, and why I think that this article is about citizenship.
