The UN began after World War II. It was made to keep peace and prevent future wars. The league of nations fell apart because it hadn't been affective. The league had some good ideals but they didn't have any military powers to carry out the decisions it made. The charter or set of rules of the UN had been drawn up. The member nations of the United Nations had to sign to agree that they would provide military forces to enforce the UN's decisions for peace keeping. There are  a total of 192 countries in the UN. The country has to submit an application to become apart of the UN and be voted in by other countries that are apart of the UN. 2/3 of the majority have to vote for the country to be in and then they become a member of the UN.
